Guest art direction of Magazine Numéro 26. Paris, France. Summer/Fall 2004.
Description: Magazine is a bi-monthly French cultural review of art, fashion, and advertising with a particular focus on the print culture of magazines. For each issue, the publication invites a different art director to take the helm of the magazine.
We tried to define an aesthetics of totalitarianism-of the we vs. I, absolutism vs. relativism-that would not be reactionary nor revisionist. Blackletter was the only reference to a pre-existing, historical form of totalitarianism but the color gradient was introduced to creolize its message and open up meaning.
Other than typography work and layout concerns, we were responsible for two stories: Life does not live by Viviane Sassen, a sultry look at oppression through technology, sex, and violence. Always think of it, never speak of it brought pieces of various artists--including Jack Pierson, Mathew Weir, Mustafa Hulusi, and Cyprien Gaillard--together with texts to form a picture book essay on despair and anguish in today's political climate.
Editor in Chief: Angelo Cirimele.
Art Directors of this issue: Kasia Korczak & Payam Sharifi.
Design of this issue: Kasia Korczak.
Photo Editor: Charlotte Bricout.
